Meet Ryan Igbanol
Ryan is a senior sanctions and financial crime expert with deep experience spanning U.S. government enforcement, global financial institutions, and enterprise-wide compliance leadership. Over the course of his career, he has worked across the full lifecycle of economic sanctions and financial crime risk—from investigation and designation to program design, implementation, remediation, and regulatory engagement.
Most recently, Ryan served as Regional Compliance Officer for the Americas at AIG, where he led economic sanctions and anti-money laundering (AML) compliance across North America, Mexico, and Central and South America. In this role, he headed the regional Financial Crime Compliance advisory function, serving as the escalation point for sanctions and AML risk. He developed and maintained enterprise sanctions and AML programs, advised business units on compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act and USA PATRIOT Act, and conducted complex investigations and transactional lookbacks involving potential sanctions and AML issues. His work focused on aligning regulatory requirements with practical, risk-based controls across diverse business lines and jurisdictions.
Previously, Ryan held senior leadership roles at major financial institutions, including Senior Vice President for Trade Product Compliance at Citibank and Head of Global Sanctions Advisory at Capital One Financial. In these positions, he advised business leadership on sanctions, trade finance, and export control risk; coordinated supervisory examinations with U.S. regulators; led enterprise-wide sanctions risk assessments; and served as the primary point of contact with the Office of Foreign Assets Control for voluntary self-disclosures, licensing matters, and regulatory inquiries. He also partnered closely with technology teams to enhance sanctions screening and payments filtering systems and developed targeted training programs informed by real-world geopolitical and regulatory developments.
Earlier in his career, Ryan served as an Economic Sanctions Investigator with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he led complex investigations targeting individuals and entities for potential designation under U.S. sanctions programs. His work included all-source investigative research—drawing on Bank Secrecy Act data, subpoenaed bank records, intelligence reporting, and foreign government information—as well as drafting administrative records supporting designation decisions. He represented the U.S. government in interagency forums, advised on escalated transactions involving potential SDN matches, and evaluated petitions seeking removal from sanctions lists.
In addition to his financial crime and sanctions work, Ryan has experience supporting rule-of-law and governance initiatives in post-conflict environments. He served as a Legislative History Coordinator for World Learning, a USAID implementation partner, supporting Kosovo’s constitution-drafting process, and as a Law Clerk with the National Center for State Courts, where he contributed to judicial reform, legislative review, and the development of Kosovo’s nationwide notary system.
Across government and industry, Ryan is recognized for his judgment, discretion, and ability to translate complex regulatory and geopolitical risk into clear, actionable guidance for senior leaders. He brings a practical, end-to-end perspective on sanctions and financial crime risk that is well suited to advisory and board roles supporting organizations operating in highly regulated and high-stakes environments.
