Position Overview

Porta Strategies is seeking a highly skilled Data Engineer to support a federal government client focused on advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, fraud detection, and data modernization initiatives.

The successful candidate will design, develop, and maintain cloud-native data architectures and data pipelines that support enterprise analytics and machine learning solutions. This role offers the opportunity to work with modern Azure technologies and help build scalable systems that enable mission-critical data-driven decision making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain modern cloud-based data architectures.
  • Develop scalable ETL/ELT pipelines supporting analytics and machine learning workloads.
  • Support data ingestion, transformation, storage, and processing across multiple environments.
  • Build and optimize data lake and data warehouse solutions.
  • Implement source control, CI/CD practices, and modern code-first development methodologies.
  • Develop data dictionaries, architecture diagrams, process documentation, and SOPs.
  • Collaborate closely with data scientists to support machine learning model deployment and operationalization.
  • Improve system reliability, scalability, monitoring, and error handling capabilities.
  • Optimize SQL environments, query performance, and cloud resource utilization.
  • Evaluate emerging AI and automation technologies to improve efficiency and performance.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience designing and maintaining enterprise data platforms.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with:
    • SQL and T-SQL development
    • Database administration and optimization
    • ETL/ELT pipeline development
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with:
    • Azure Synapse Analytics
    • Azure Machine Learning
    • Cloud-based data architectures
  • Strong Python programming experience, including data processing and automation.
  • Experience supporting analytics and machine learning environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Microsoft Azure certifications (DP-203 or equivalent).
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines and source control.
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools and cloud automation.
  • Experience with PySpark, Spark, Polars, Databricks, or similar technologies.
  • Experience supporting analytical, investigative, audit, compliance, or oversight environments.
  • Familiarity with AI coding assistants, LLM integration patterns, and AI-enabled engineering workflows.
  • Experience working in highly regulated environments.
